What separates a good annual report from a great one? The Communicator Awards’ 3rd Annual Report of Annual Reports sets out to answer that. And, we’re proud that two of the reports we created are included in it.

This guide unpacks why the innovative reports featured grab attention and how they transform data into compelling storytelling that draws readers in with clarity. 

The Annual Report of Annual Reports is not just a showcase, it’s an inside look at strategic communications. 

Impactful annual reports invite readers in — they build gradually to earn the audience’s attention, use striking visuals to drive points home, and transform metrics into real human stories that create an unforgettable and compelling narrative. 

One of our reports, for John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin (JHS PHD) was featured for the inspirational way we brought emotion to the data. Dedicated to creating safer communities by supporting people who have been involved with the criminal justice system, JHS PHD often struggles with successfully expressing the importance and the impact of their work. Using their five core beliefs — human rights, justice for all, access to services, empowerment, and community engagement — we strategically told stories to emphasize the message that everyone belongs here. 

The other featured annual report was for Esquimalt Nation, a small First Nation community in B.C. It showcased the strength of the report’s final chapter — a story we titled “Vision for Tomorrow”. Throughout the report, we used strategic storytelling to highlight the impact of the significant strides the Nation had made in realizing the initiatives in their five-year Comprehensive Community Plan. The purpose of ending the report with a vision for tomorrow was to show the community that this report wasn’t the end; it was the beginning of what was to come next.
